Andy Cole
Radiation Protection Advicor,
Stephen Green Associates
I entered higher education earlier than some, but later than most, and I spent a very exciting decade studying radiation physics - which finally led to the completion of my PhD in 2013. After postdoc positions working on various particle physics and dark matter research projects, I accepted a position at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, CA, working on the Lux-Zeplin dark matter detector (as of now the world’s most sensitive dark matter detector).
For many years I toyed with idea of a career in radiation protection, and when my time in Berkeley concluded in 2020, I returned to the UK and was offered the opportunity to join SG&A. I love my job, I learn something new every day, and I take pride in giving advice to our clients. In addition to becoming a certificated Radiation Protection Adviser I am also working towards certification as a Radioactive Waste Adviser.
In 2023 I was offered the opportunity to expand my knowledge into laser protection advice in the veterinary sector. I have worked with many well-respected LPA’s to further my understanding of the legal framework, and how to apply that framework to our client’s applications in order to achieve the best compliance possible. I intend to submit my portfolio of evidence for LPA certification in late 2024 / early 2025.
Being able to provide bespoke advice to our clients for ionizing, and non-ionizing radiation together, is something that I am very excited about going forward.
