Benedict Duncan Lascelles

Dr. Lascelles is the Dr. J. McNeely and Lynne K. DuBose Distinguished Professor of Musculoskeletal Health, and Professor of Translational Pain Research. Since his PhD training at Bristol, UK, he has devoted is professional career to improving our ability to recognize and treat pain in animals. His research program (Translational Research in Pain [TRiP]) develops methods to measure pain associated with spontaneous disease in animals and seeks to understand the underlying neurobiology. Leveraging these measurement techniques in proof of concept studies his work improves our understanding of how to control pain in companion animals, and facilitates analgesic development in human medicine, and discovery of relevant pain signaling mechanisms. He has a particular interest the measurement of movement in relation to pain, the role of neurotrophins and neurotrophic factors, and the effect of pain on the progression of cancer. He is director of the Comparative Pain Research and Education Centre (CPREC). He has authored over 260 peer reviewed research papers and reviews, over 330 research abstracts, and ~ 30 book chapters.
