David Humphrey
MBBS DA,
Senior University Lecturer (Retired), Research in Medical and Veterinary Anaesthesia,
Specialist Research Anaesthetist, Consultant to Anaequip-Vet UK
Born in the UK, Dr David Humphrey trained as doctor at UCH London (1970). He worked for four years in Zululand then as a trainee anaesthetist. Being interested in low-flow anaesthesia, he later transferred into a senior university research lecturer’s post. He designed the Humphrey ADE-circle, a highly efficient multi-purpose anaesthetic breathing system for adults and children, used in the NHS from 1980. In 1999 a vet bought one; after his paper at BSAVA-2000, it became a popular very low-flow system in veterinary practice, cutting costs by 50-80%. With updates, it’s now 100% efficient in all modes of use requiring only 300-500 ml/kg/min for animals up to 50kg. It’s ideal with sevoflurane and the only system a practice requires for RCVS inspections.
