Consultant Paediatrician & Paediatric Neurologist,
Cork
Dr Niamh Lynch is a consultant paediatrician. She graduated from University College Cork in 1998. She currently works in the Bon Secours Hospital in Cork. She strives to provide an efficient but compassionate service to the children of Cork. During the Covid 19 pandemic she noticed that parents and children were increasingly stressed and anxious. She wrote pieces for the Irish newspapers to raise awareness around childhood anxiety, and appeared on radio, television and in print media advocating that children have access to clothing and footwear during the lockdowns. In January 2021, she started an Instagram page which shared information with parents, who were finding it increasingly difficult to get an appointment with their family doctors. Dr Lynch shared information with parents in a kind, open manner, often using her own experience as a mother to help new parents. In a short period of time, she had thousands of followers, mainly mothers aged 30-44. Realizing that some parents and guardians prefer video format to the written word, she then established a Tik Tok account, where she posts informative videos. Within three weeks she had thousands of followers on this account, again mainly mothers of young children. She realized that there is a huge demand for reliable, factual information regarding child health amongst parents and guardians. She continues to work on radio (96 fm Opinion Line, Ray D’Arcy Show) and podcasts (The Sleep Mums, Dr Doireann O’ Leary) to advocate for children, and raise awareness of child health issues. Dr Lynch lives with her two daughters, and her amazingly supportive husband. They share their house with Snoopy the lab, Tux the cat, Mr Tipples the tortoise, and share their garden with six hens and a bantam rooster called Elton John!
