Sam McGaw

Sam studied at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), qualifying as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2015 and graduating with her BSc (Hons) in 2016. She has worked in the ECC department of the RVC Queen Mother Hospital for Animals since 2015 and is a Nutrition Champion for the QMH Nutrition Focus group. Sam’s clinical audit on nutrition for the ECC patient was presented at BVNA Congress Research Bites in 2022 and awarded Highly Commended Runner Up in the 2023 RCVS Knowledge Quality Improvement Awards. Sam also presented at the European Veterinary and Emergency Critical Care Congress in 2025 on ‘Stabilisation and nursing considerations following a suspected toxin ingestion’. In 2022 Sam began working for the RVC’s Veterinary Nursing School as a Clinical Educator and held a fixed term Teaching Fellow position in 2024. She contributes to the delivery and assessment of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary nursing programmes, is Deputy Unit Leader on the postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Nursing in ECC and is a Project Supervisor for BSc veterinary nursing students. Sam is a qualified Clinical Supervisor for Student Veterinary Nurses and has developed inductions for BVetMed students on critical care and emergency medicine rotations. She is a part of the RVC Interprofessional Education Team and facilitates sessions for BVM students and SVNs. Sam gained her Vets Now Certificate in Emergency and Critical Care in 2019. In 2022 she was amongst the first cohort of students to be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Nursing in Emergency and Critical Care (with merit) at the RVC. She completed her Postgraduate Certificate in Veterinary Education (with merit) in 2024.
