Sonja graduated in veterinary medicine in 1995 at the Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen, Germany. Following a few years of mixed practice in Devon and a PhD in molecular virology back in Germany, she joined the RVC in 2004 initially as the equivalent to a Veterinary Investigation Officer. This was later followed by lectureship and senior lectureship in Farm Animal Disease Diagnostics. In 2021, Sonja became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath) with specialisation in farm animal pathology by examination.
