Season 3 of Borborygmi: Noises from the veterinary world podcast launched on Monday the 3rd of May 2021, with weekly releases as well as community conversations within the Vets Stay Go Diversify Facebook Community over the next 10 weeks.

A new charity is being launched to support all those in the veterinary profession who are living and working with chronic illness and disability.

British Veterinary Chronic Illness Support (BVCIS) will seek to serve a section of the veterinary community who are often under-acknowledged and under-represented on the wider professional stage. We aim to support those who are living with long-term health conditions, to educate the veterinary community on what living with ill-health is like and how to support their colleagues, and to advocate for them at all levels of the profession.

To celebrate the fact that this year’s London Vet Show is going ahead in person, IVC Evidensia has decided to shake things up a little with their lecture streams.

Their plan, for both their small animal Referrals and Equine referrals lectures, is to have a series of topics, relevant to both first opinion vets and nurses, with specialists from different disciplines talking about how they would approach that topic.

“The arc of my career has been all about increasing the accessibility of veterinary expertise for companion animals. So, I’m super grateful that we have been able to help so many clinics help so many pets. But we’re just getting started.” says Dr Thom Jenkins, CEO at PetsApp. “Veterinary teams are stretched right now, so we’re keen to get this tool to more of them, saving them time and giving them more control over their working day while clearly delighting pet owners and helping pets.”

Inclusion and diversity is important 365 days of the year. But June is a month where people really reflect and take influence, proudly flying rainbow flags and making conscious decisions to talk about and celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride. It’s a specific month dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ+ communities across the world. Pride is usually celebrated with parades, marches and gatherings. While celebrations and awareness events have had to go virtual for now, support for the LGBTQ+ community is as significant, and more important as ever. 

During her many years of locum life, Molly has worked with some incredible, talented, inspirational professionals. She came across so many small businesses that she loved supporting, from sustainable scrub hats, pocket organizers, stationary, personalised stethoscopes and even scissors engraved with your name! 

The only issue was Molly’s memory has never been that great. So, after a busy shift remembering 100 of jobs, medications, patients, and consults. It was hard to then remember the name of the small business she wanted to buy from later that night. It wasn’t easy finding them on Amazon or Etsy because the marketplaces were not designed for medical equipment and were too impersonal.

World Veterinary Day is the last Saturday of April every year. The concept of a day to celebrate the veterinary profession was an initiative by the World Veterinary Association in 2000 to highlight the contribution of veterinary teams around the world. In 2021, there’s more reasons than ever before to celebrate your friends and colleagues.

Professor Jill Maddison is the Professor of General Practice at the Royal Veterinary College, as well as a successful editor of several small animal publications. Since the inception of the London Vet Show in 2009, she has also been the brain power behind the acclaimed RVC Companion Animal Clinical streams - which is back with a bang this November at the ExCeL. 

As restrictions lift in the UK, many of us are starting to have somewhat of a sense of normality returning to social, professional and family life. However, the lasting impact of several lockdowns and extensive social distancing will be felt for years to come, and it’s easy to forget about the subsections of our community who were impacted the most. We sat down with a fourth year veterinary student Becky (University of Surrey, class of 2022) to talk about studying veterinary science amidst a pandemic, and the lasting impact it will have on the next generation of veterinary professionals. 

Spring is well and truly here. The sun is out, clocks have gone forward, kids are back in school, pubs and restaurants are open outside and restrictions are slowly lifting. So perhaps online CPD and webinars aren’t high on your priority list but we want to give you an opportunity to get the best of both worlds.

The first social media I remember is Myspace. Before that was online chat rooms. Maybe if we went back to when we all had to wait for dial-up internet, we would have more time to think about what we are going to post or comment on. If I continue, I will really age myself.
