Having a structured process for veterinary teams to understand and learn from things that don’t go as planned has many benefits. Nearly one year ago I was named as one of the London Vet Show 30 under Thirty individuals, an award given to outstanding individuals in the veterinary community. A huge honor for anyone receiving recognition like this from their peers in what I consider one of the greatest professions in the world. So for me to get this, firstly was a surprise, but also a blessing, something that 10,15, 18 year old me never would have thought would ever be possible!

As the description suggests, owner absent behaviour problems occur when owners are not present to observe either the initiating event or their dog’s subsequent distress. Inevitably, separation related behaviours (SRBs) are only reported as a separation related problem (SRP) once a behaviour becomes a problem for the owner; predominantly due to damage caused to the home or neighbour’s complaints regarding noise. Hence this complaint can have severe implications for the owner-animal bond and potential for relinquishment.
